My own method of serving drinks is an easy one, if you can find the right size bowls. I have a very large bowl which I fill with ice. Then I prepare my cocktails in a smaller bowl, which I then set on the ice. With a ladle, my guests are able to serve themselves just as they would at a punch bowl. The drinks stay cold, without being diluted, as they would if you just floated ice in the cocktails.

If you can’t find bowls to work (I got mine in a dime store in clear glass for less than $1.00 each), get clear glass pitchers. Fill a bowl with ice water and set the pitchers into it. Don’t fill the bowl with ice, as you’ll spill the pitchers every time you replace them, and remember that they’ll drip while pouring.

You’ll need cocktail glasses. Regardless of what anyone tells you (and chances are it will be someone who gives dreadful parties), martinis do not taste the same in tea cups. Most cities have party supply houses from which you can rent cocktail glasses. They needn’t be the finest crystal, but they do need to be stemmed.

It’s the first half an hour that will make or break your party. During this time you must get your guests, those few who will arrive on time, to relax and start enjoying themselves. Give the very first ones something to do, such as setting up the drinks. Introduce the early arrivals to one another, but once the room starts filling up, drop this. By this time your guests will be meeting one another, starting conversations, and even flirtations. Every time you bring things to a halt to introduce a newcomer all the way around, it will be harder to get things going again. Introduce the newcomer to one group, or a particular person that you think he’ll be interested in for one reason or another.
